FOOD STALLS

For our Christmas market we’ve a bumper 48 stalls offering the finest food and drink – and some great gift ideas for foodies! Here’s where to check for your favourite market traders

FRUIT & VEG & DRINKS

Kew Brewery Cheers to local brewer David Scott whose ales have become regular sell-outs at the market. Using only English hops and malts, they are unrefined natural beers sustainably brewed less than a mile from Kew Gardens, which also inspired names such as Pagoda pale ale and richer Botanic amber ale. www.kewbrewery.co.uk

Real Ale Ltd We are a local company based in East Twickenham, close to Richmond Bridge. It’s simple – there are some great bottled beers out there but they can be really hard to find. We taste a lot and bring them all under one roof, so that everyone gets to enjoy them! We also offer a great range of wines, sourced from small producers and not found in larger retailers, and have an ever-changing selection of cask (draught) beer. www.realale.com

Ringden Farm Chris and Lesley Dench will again be bringing their award-winning apple and pear juices to Kew this month. They set up their juice business in 1990, using fruit from their orchards after a violent hailstorm marked the crop, and their use of traditional pressing methods and slow pasteurisation preserves the real flavour of the fruit. And thanks to popular demand, they’ll also be selling their scrumptious apples and pears plus cordials and jams. www.ringdenfarm.co.uk

Wild Country Organics We’re delighted that the winner of the Fresh Produce Category of the prestigious Soil Food Association Awards has become a regular at the market. The farm has been organic since 1988 and specialises in producing a wide variety of summer and winter vegetables, herbs and salad leaves. Because the quality is so high, you’ll often find that your bag of leaves will last the week – if you can keep them that long! www.wildco.co.uk

Matugga Rum Here’s a real taste of sunshine – award-winning sipping spirits made using the finest ingredients from the easterly region of Africa: Golden Rum with a smooth, harmonious flavour to which fragrant natural ingredients and spices are added for Matuga Spiced Rum. And here’s a sweet thought: you can also enjoy the flavour in Mattugga Rum Cake. www.matuggarum.com

MEAT AND FISH

Hunts Hill Farm John and Georgina Emerson have been farming in Normandy, near Guildford, for 26 years. Their beef is grass-fed and allowed to graze all year round; their chicken and ducks are all free-range and dry-plucked; and the free-range pork is mostly from saddlebacks. They’ll also be bringing a variety of different flavoured sausages and eggs to the market. www.huntshillfarm.com

The Portland Scallop Co Jamie Walker is based near Chesil Beach and most of the fish he sells at Sunday’s market will have been caught on the Dorset or Devon coast on Friday. What he sells depends on what the boats bring in, so his stall will have what’s in season from a range including bass, bream, monkfish, lemon sole, mullet, plaice, turbot, brill, lemon or dover sole, oysters and lobster, as well as rope-grown mussels and dived scallops. He’s also likely to bring whole cooked crab, home-made crab soup and fishcakes. Most of his fish will already be gutted and scaled, but any other preparation can be done at the market.

Winterbourne Game Chris Norcott specialises in the best seasonal game: rabbit, pigeon, venison, game sausages and burgers to cook at home, as well as casseroles, pies and terrines. If you tend to steer clear of game because you don’t know what to do with it, Chris and his partner Kate will be happy to advise you on what to buy and how to cook it. They’ll also be cooking venison burgers, sausages and loin in rolls for delicious on-the-go lunches at the market. www.winterbournegame.co.uk

DELICATESSEN

Aroma Organics Jane Isfort specialises in chutneys (such as Old English to go with cheese and Mango and Ginger for curries) and gluten- and additive-free sauces, as well as seasonal Three Fruit and Blood Orange marmalades.

Avlaki Superb Organic Olive Oils We keep the olive in the olive oil! We bring you single-estate, unfiltered, organic olive oil, bottled fresh from milling (four weeks from the tree to the bottle – no-one else brings it in this fresh to the UK!). These are ‘finishing’ oils for drizzling on dishes and dipping with bread. When we have presented these oils at events such as the Real Food Festival and the Food and Drink Expo, people have said they’ve never tasted olive oil as good. That’s because it’s the authentic taste of olive oil – the taste every olive farmer knows! www.oliveoilavlaki.com

Bookham Harrison Farms New to Kew land a huge hit last month, this stall specialises in award-winning Italian-style hard cheeses: Sussex Charmer, which combines the recipes for a mature Cheddar with that of a Parmesan; and Twickenham Grange, the only Vegetarian Society-approved Parmesan-style cheese. www.bookhams.com

Our ethos is ‘less is more’ and our products are natural, simple and effective. www.naturalbeeswaxcreams.com

Gallery 66 All the jewellery is designed and made by Lisa Heyler and Homi Jennings and we draw our inspiration from the forms, textures and beauty found in Mother Nature. We use freshwater pearls in many of our designs, to bring an air of purity and delicacy, often mixing them with silver for a contemporary feel.

Conkers Handknits For over 20 years we’ve been producing innovative collections of designer jumpers and accessories. Comfortable, practical and contemporary, all our distinctive children’s wear is hand-made, machine washable and made from 100% cotton. www.conkers-handknits.co.uk

Honeypot Beads We design and hand-make beaded and glass jewellery. Our beads are mostly stone or glass, some made from scratch by us – for our pendants, for instance, we layer pieces of glass and fire them in our kiln to fuse them together. As each item of jewellery is hand-made it is rare to find two pieces the same. Our range includes necklaces, bracelets, earrings and mobile phone charms, and all come in an attractive gift bag, making them perfect presents.

Jo Beckett Ceramics I am a London-based potter making functional pieces on the wheel in both stoneware and porcelain clays. Form, function, surface texture and colour are what I keep in mind as I aim to make everyday pots which people love to use. All my pots are both dishwasher and microwave safe. As well as my continual development of stock products, I also work with clients on commissions. www.jobeckettceramics.co.uk

Katalin Szallas Ceramics Shape is very important in my hand-made ceramics, but I also put a lot of emphasis on decoration. Most of my pieces – mugs, teapots, bowls, jars and vases – are thrown on a potter’s wheel and decorated individually, some with slip decoration and others raku-fired. www.katalinszallasceramics.co.uk
